Riding the Green Wave
One such initiative is the Green Wave Society, a student-led sustainability group that enables students to take meaningful, practical action for the benefit of the wider school community.
Founded by Senior School student Eloise, the society has already led several impactful projects, including raising awareness around the installation of solar panels on campus. The group has also fundraised for ACRES, a grassroots wildlife rescue charity, and LUNI Singapore, supporting local animal welfare initiatives.
Eloise shared: “I started the Green Wave Society because there wasn’t an environmental society in the Senior School. I’m most proud of our stalls at the Summer and Christmas Fairs, where we turned unused items and fabrics into bows and scrunchies.”
Hands-On Learning Through Urban Farming
Through a pathway partnership with Grobrix, a leader in high-tech urban farming, the Green Wave Society has helped establish a sophisticated closed-loop food system on campus.
This real-world business engagement allows students to explore the complexities of sustainable agriculture by cultivating premium produce for the school’s caterer, Victus Catering. By integrating harvested produce directly into school meals, students gain a tangible understanding of food security and sustainability, while contributing to a circular economy that connects learning to daily life across both Junior and Senior School.
Matthew Howe, Founder of Grobrix, shared: “Our partnership with NLCS (Singapore) is a brilliant example of how urban farming can transform a school environment into a living laboratory. Students move beyond theory and get hands-on, connecting technology directly to the food they eat.”
Victus Catering added: “Students regularly harvest vegetables with Grobrix before preparing and sharing their produce with peers, encouraging sustainable eating habits and a deeper appreciation of where food comes from.”
Campus-Wide Plastic Recycling Initiative Takes Shape
The society’s most recent project includes a trial plastic bottle recycling programme. Working collaboratively with the Student Council and the Environment and Sustainability Coordinator, Ms Avila, clearly labelled recycling bins have been introduced across the campus to make sustainable choices more accessible for the entire school community.
There are plans to build on this work by expanding into composting and wider waste-reduction initiatives in the future.
Ms Avila reflected: “It’s incredibly rewarding to see our students’ excitement when new initiatives are put in place. The positive response from the community shows just how empowering student-led action can be.” Anya, a member of the Green Wave Society, added: “I joined the society because I wanted to make a real difference. I hope we can expand into more service projects, like beach clean-ups, to have an even bigger impact on our community.”
Service & Sustainability Summit: Empowering Student Leaders
Looking ahead, the annual Service and Sustainability Summit will bring together students, industry professionals, and sustainability advocates for a day of inspiration and action. Designed to empower students to lead positive environmental change, the summit will connect them with real-world role models shaping the future of eco-business and social impact, including partners such as Waterways Watch Society of Singapore, Plastify, SPCA Singapore, and our ongoing sustainability partner Grobrix, all of whom will be supporting this fantastic event.
Featuring hands-on workshops such as textile upcycling and plastic repurposing, alongside talks from sustainability experts and community organisations, the summit will encourage students to take ownership, think creatively, and actively shape a more sustainable future within Singapore and beyond.
