In November 2024, North London Collegiate School (Singapore) had the honour of hosting the F1 in Schools Singapore Nationals, a premier event in the STEM education calendar. This marked the first occasion where the school not only participated but also served as the venue for this globally recognised competition.
F1 in Schools: A Platform for Practical Learning
F1 in Schools is an international STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) initiative that challenges students to design, manufacture, and race miniature compressed air-powered cars. This multifaceted programme offers participants a taste of real-world engineering and project management, encompassing roles in design, branding, marketing, and sponsorship. By engaging in this competition, students apply theoretical knowledge to practical scenarios, honing skills that are invaluable in professional industries.
Student Experiences and Insights
The competition provided NLCS (Singapore) students with a platform to explore various aspects of engineering and teamwork. Freddie, a Grade 11 student, expressed his newfound appreciation for the business dynamics in F1:
“I now understand more about the business aspect that’s necessary to compete in F1. The exhilaration that I felt when watching our car launch along the track was incredible!”
Similarly, Sydney, also in Grade 11, highlighted the importance of specialisation within a team setting:
“It has given me the opportunity to understand the significance of specialisation in teamwork, as well as understand how the engineering of F1 cars work.”
Denise, a Grade 9 student and her team’s graphic designer, shared her experience in developing digital art skills:
“Being the graphic designer of my team allows me to further develop my digital art skills. My favourite part is working with my team and contacting different companies for sponsorship.”
Faculty Perspective
Mr. Wilson Law, Head of Design and Engineering at NLCS (Singapore), emphasised the educational value of the programme:NLCS Singapore+1expatliving.sg+1
“F1 in Schools offers a unique opportunity for students to apply classroom knowledge of STEM education to real-world challenges. The interdisciplinary nature of the competition – blending Design, Physics and Engineering – sparks innovation and critical thinking.”
Looking Ahead
Building on the success of hosting the nationals, NLCS (Singapore) plans to expand its F1 in Schools programme, inviting more students to participate in future cohorts. This initiative underscores the school’s dedication to providing students with experiential learning opportunities that bridge academic concepts with real-world applications.
By integrating such programmes into the curriculum, NLCS (Singapore) continues to foster an environment where innovation, collaboration, and practical skills are at the forefront of education.
