First School: Building Strong Foundations (Pre-KG to Grade 1)

At NLCS (Singapore), the First School marks the beginning of your child’s educational journey, where curiosity, creativity, and confidence are nurtured in a warm and inclusive environment. Spanning Pre-Kindergarten, Kindergarten 1 and 2, and Grade 1, this foundational stage is designed to spark a love of learning, foster resilience, and develop independence—essential skills for future success.

In the early years of the First School, children are introduced to the joys of exploration and discovery. Through a balance of hands-on activities, play-based learning, and carefully structured academic challenges, every child is encouraged to develop their natural curiosity and creativity.

What Sets Us Apart

Integrated Learning: Our curriculum blends foundational skills in literacy, numeracy, and inquiry with opportunities for creative expression, ensuring a holistic approach to education.

Personal Growth: Activities are designed to build confidence, social skills, and emotional well-being, empowering children to thrive in a supportive community.

Language and Culture: Daily Mandarin sessions immerse students in language learning, supported by cultural activities that broaden their understanding of the world.

As children progress to Kindergarten 2 and Grade 1, they begin to transition from early exploration to more focused subject-based learning. These years are pivotal for developing critical thinking and independence, preparing students for the Lower School.

Spanning Grades 2 to 5, this phase broadens students’ academic and personal horizons, fostering independence, intellectual curiosity, and resilience.

In the Lower School, students engage with a broad and balanced curriculum that encourages exploration and critical thinking. Subject specialists guide their learning in areas such as Science, Mandarin, Music, and Physical Education, supported by dedicated facilities that enhance their educational experience. Through inquiry-based learning, collaborative projects, and hands-on activities, students develop the confidence to tackle challenges creatively and independently.

Need to Know More?

NLCS (Singapore) offers a stimulating primary education that combines academic excellence with rich opportunities for exploration. Taught by highly qualified specialist teachers and supported by state‑of‑the‑art facilities, our curriculum develops literacy, numeracy and scientific thinking through engaging lessons and creative, real‑world learning experiences that inspire curiosity, confidence and a genuine love of learning.

Families value Early Years at NLCS (Singapore) for its nurturing, play-based approach that builds confidence, communication, and curiosity. With world-class facilities, passionate teachers, and strong parent partnerships, we provide our students with an inspiring start to lifelong learning.

The Early Years programme provides a warm, play-based environment that nurtures curiosity, language development, and confidence. With caring teachers and a focus on exploration, students develop essential social, emotional, and cognitive skills for lifelong learning. Students are also taught Phonics and Maths lessons teaching them the early fundamental skills of reading and number.

Junior School at NLCS (Singapore) develops problem-solving and critical-thinking skills by immersing students in lessons that prioritise questioning, reasoning and the application of knowledge to real-life situations. Across subjects, pupils are routinely asked to explain their thinking, tackle open-ended tasks and consider multiple strategies or solutions, helping them to become increasingly independent, reflective learners who are confident in approaching new and complex challenges.

Science, Mathematics and Innovation are taught in ways that build both curiosity and confidence. Lessons are typically concept‑driven and begin with questions, puzzles or real‑life problems, encouraging pupils to think, predict and explain rather than simply follow procedures. Practical, hands-on activities and visual models help students see themselves as capable scientists and mathematicians. Specialist Science teachers lead engaging investigative work in well‑resourced spaces, while teachers across subjects make regular links to problem‑solving, pattern‑spotting and creative design, so that curiosity, reasoning and innovation are developed consistently from the earliest years.

Teachers skilfully personalise learning, adapting lessons to challenge and support every student, with expert input from the Individual Needs team. In our strongly inclusive and nurturing environment, no pupil is overlooked: each child is known, encouraged and rigorously supported to realise their full potential, both academically and personally.

Technology is used purposefully to enhance creativity, collaboration, and problem-solving. Interactive tools and digital resources support core subjects while maintaining a healthy balance with hands-on learning. Students have weekly Computer Science lessons where the subject is taught discretely and technology is also used to enhance home room lessons.

English is the primary language of instruction, with Mandarin taught from the early years. Additional mother-tongue programmes are available to help students maintain and develop their native languages.

Students develop confidence, independence and strong study habits through personalised guidance, enrichment and a wide range of leadership opportunities. Wholeschool events and activities throughout the year, including Senior School students working alongside and mentoring Junior School pupils, foster a powerful sense of community and aspiration. Teachers across the Junior and Senior Schools meet regularly to discuss pupils and ensure vertical alignment and clear progression in the curriculum, so that learning builds coherently from year to year. These close professional conversations, together with carefully planned transition activities, ensure that the move into the Senior School is smooth, supportive and academically seamless.

First School (Pre-KG–G1) runs from 8:20 AM to 2:20 PM for Pre-KG/KG1 and 7:50 AM to 3:00 PM for KG2–G1. Lower School (G2–G5) operates from 7:50 AM to 3:00 PM, including scheduled enrichment sessions.

Homework is minimal in early grades and gradually increases with age. It reinforces class learning, fosters independence, and encourages reading, reflection, and family engagement in learning. Daily reading is encouraged for every student.

Teachers and parents stay connected through Seesaw updates, reading records, weekly planners, and termly parent–teacher conferences and academic reports, ensuring open communication and shared understanding of each student’s progress.
