At NLCS (Singapore), our Junior School Model United Nations (MUN) Team provides an inspiring introduction to global scholarship. This term, our young delegates have been engaging thoughtfully with the complexities of international affairs, laying the foundations for both academic rigour and personal growth.
The team is made up of two groups: a developmental cohort of Grades 4 and 5 students, exploring the structure of the United Nations and practising key skills in debate and diplomacy, and a select group of twelve Grade 5 students preparing to represent the school at the NLCS International MUN Conference in London in June 2026. Together, these students demonstrate curiosity, collaboration, and an early sense of global responsibility.
Many students are drawn to MUN through an interest in world events and a desire to strengthen essential academic skills, including public speaking, critical listening, and diplomatic reasoning. By adopting the perspectives of national delegates, students research global issues, consider solutions, and practise negotiation within the framework of international cooperation. This authentic experience mirrors the work of the United Nations, offering a meaningful introduction to political literacy and global citizenship, core values nurtured at our international school in Singapore.
In preparation for the London conference, students are rehearsing formal debate procedures, developing consensus-building strategies, and engaging in activities such as Yes, But and Just a Minute. They will soon begin researching their allocated countries and global themes, including climate change and plastic pollution, with leadership naturally emerging as each student contributes to the delegation’s shared purpose.
Beyond academics, this journey fosters confidence, empathy, and scholarly maturity. As they look forward to representing NLCS (Singapore) among international peers, and enjoying cultural experiences such as the Harry Potter Studios and a West End show, our students are building the skills and mindset that will serve them throughout their education and beyond.
