Tuesday November 5, 2024

On 23 and 24 October, North London Collegiate School (Singapore) proudly hosted the Middle Leaders Conference, continuing the tradition of rotating venues across our international campuses. The recent NLCS Middle Leaders’ Conference brought together aspiring middle leaders from NLCS campuses in Jeju, Dubai, Singapore, and London for an enriching two-day professional development experience. Designed to empower participants in honing their leadership abilities, the conference’s theme, “Challenge & Support: Leading Teams with a Focus on the Individual, Not the Cohort,” underscored the importance of individualised team management and evidence-informed decision-making.

Day 1

Day 1 featured renowned educational thought leader Dylan Wiliam, best known for his contributions to feedback and assessment for learning. With his engaging presentation style, Wiliam addressed the fundamentals of creating a school environment that champions the individual needs of students. He shared insights from his widely acclaimed work, *Inside the Black Box*, emphasising the importance of assessment in shaping a school culture that prioritises impact and continuous improvement.

Day 2

On Day 2, seasoned Headmaster and educational strategist Mark Bishop shared his expertise in leading and supporting educational teams. Drawing on his extensive experience across prominent institutions, Bishop focused on building cohesive teaching teams while maintaining a personalised approach to supporting each teacher’s growth. His practical approach and in-depth understanding of middle leaders’ challenges resonated with attendees, who left with actionable strategies for leading effective teams.

Reflecting on the event

Reflecting on the success of the event, NLCS (Singapore) Principal shared, “One of the real strengths of the NLCS family is our commitment to investing in leadership, and bringing our staff together for events like this only strengthens that bond. Insights from experts like Dylan Wiliam and Mark Bishop have given us a fresh perspective on evidence-based practices and personalised support—key elements in creating the best possible environment for our students to thrive.

The NLCS Middle Leaders’ Conference proved to be a valuable opportunity for emerging leaders across the network to deepen their skills, connect with peers, and reflect on their roles in shaping the educational landscape. With insights gained from experts like Wiliam and Bishop, attendees are well-prepared to implement positive change within their schools.
