The Junior Poetry Competition 2024 brought together over 200 wonderful poems on the theme of “World Ocean’s Day” 🌊 from KS2 students across FOBISIA Member Schools. The quality of entries was so high that FOBISIA shared, “The quality was outstanding, making it tough to choose the winners.” Congratulations to everyone who took part—and especially to the winners!
We’re proud to share that our very own Alaaina took the top spot in the Years 3-4 Category! 🎉 She’s shared some thoughtful reflections on her experience and what the win means to her.
Why did you decide to join the competition?
I decided to join the competition because I’ve been inspired by the students who participated in past FOBISIA events since I started at NLCS (Singapore).
One of my dreams has always been to represent my school in this competition. Writing is something I love, so I saw this as a great chance to challenge myself and grow as a writer.
What inspired your poem?
My poem was inspired by what I learned about migration in school. As I researched, I became really interested in how war zones, like the conflict between Ukraine and Russia, compel so many people to leave their homes. Hearing the stories of families fleeing danger moved me deeply, and I wanted to express those feelings in my poem.
What are your thoughts about winning the competition?
Winning the competition was both exciting and humbling for me. I know there were so many talented writers who participated, which makes it even more special. This experience has motivated me to keep writing about important issues and to share my thoughts with others. I want to continue exploring my ideas and finding ways to express them creatively.
