At NLCS (Singapore), sustainability is embedded throughout the curriculum, aligned with our school’s ethos of nurturing Global Citizens with international mindedness. Guided by the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), our programme helps students develop a deep understanding of their ecological footprint and the wider impact of human activity on the planet. Through an interdisciplinary approach across subjects such as science, geography, literature, and design, students explore key themes including:

  • Biodiversity and habitats
  • Climate change and the carbon cycle
  • Ethical consumption and waste reduction
  • Energy resources and renewable technologies
  • Environmental justice and global inequality

By embedding sustainability across disciplines, we ensure it is not just a topic—but a mindset that shapes how students think, question, and innovate. Project-based learning, scientific investigations, and real-world challenges empower students to become active problem-solvers – confidently addressing the environmental issues of today and tomorrow.

At the heart of this movement is the Green Wave Society - our student-led environmental club. This dynamic group champions school-wide initiatives, from waste reduction campaigns to sustainable art installations, giving students the chance to lead by example and amplify their impact across the community. Supported by our passionate Environment and Sustainability Coordinator, these enrichment opportunities ensure that every student can take meaningful, student-driven action for a more sustainable future.

Beyond the classroom, students at NLCS (Singapore) are empowered to take ownership of their environmental learning through a wide range of co-curricular activities and student-led societies. These platforms are designed to inspire creativity, collaboration, and meaningful leadership in sustainability. Whether participating in environmental hackathons, upcycling workshops, or designing sustainable solutions, students engage in hands-on experiences that allow them to:

  • Collaborate across year groups and subject areas
  • Explore sustainability through innovation, design, and critical thinking
  • Prototype and test eco-friendly solutions in real-world contexts
  • Build confidence in presenting, advocating, and leading change

Some of our recent initiatives include:

  • Plastic bottle recycling programme
    • Launched with the support of our student-led society, Green Wave Society and the Student Council
  • Hands-on gardening with Grobrix
    • Our Junior School students have been actively involved in harvesting fresh produce, some of which is enjoyed by Senior School students in the Victus salad bar.
    • Other harvests have been used to raise funds for Depot Aid, and we are looking ahead to train some staff and students in growing greens independently, extending the hands-on learning and impact of these projects.
  • Grobrix Smoothie Bar experience
    • Our parent and student communities explored the journey from harvest to smoothie, blending vibrant, home-grown ingredients, thanks to our hydroponic wall.

Our residential trips programme plays a key role in developing environmentally conscious, globally minded learners. Many trips are intentionally selected for their focus on sustainability, conservation, and community impact.

Some of our exciting trips include:

  • Grade 6 trip to Tioman Students participated in coral preservation projects, gaining hands-on experience in protecting marine ecosystems

Trips help our students:

  • Deepen student understanding of environmental systems and challenges
  • Encourage active participation in conservation and community projects
  • Promote sustainable living practices in diverse settings
  • Foster leadership, collaboration, and a sense of global responsibility

Whether exploring forests, coastlines, or rural communities, students return from these trips with renewed purpose and a strong connection to the natural world.

To amplify our impact, NLCS (Singapore) partners with leading global organisations that offer students unique insights into conservation, activism, and sustainable leadership.

2041 Foundation

Through our partnership with Robert Swan’s 2041 Foundation, students explore the importance of protecting Antarctica and the global implications of climate action. Independent research and student-led initiatives are inspired by Swan’s powerful message and legacy.

Roots & Shoots

As part of Jane Goodall’s renowned Roots & Shoots programme, students take action to protect biodiversity and promote compassionate leadership. Participation in summits and local projects nurtures respect for all living things and strengthens their commitment to conservation.

Service and Sustainability Summit 2026

The Junior School summit has been running for the past three years. Starting in 2026, a summit will also be organised for Grade 6 students, featuring interactive workshops led by external providers on sustainability and leadership.

These partnerships transform global issues into personal missions - encouraging our students to become active stewards of the planet.
