At NLCS (Singapore), we believe in strong partnerships between school and home. Parents are actively encouraged to participate in school life through a variety of initiatives that strengthen our community and enhance students’ experiences.

Ways for Parents to Get Involved:
  • Class Representatives: Act as key links between parents and the school, welcoming new families, sharing updates, and helping coordinate social events.
  • Parent Ambassadors: Lead activity and interest groups, support admissions events, and foster a welcoming school environment.
  • Friends of the Arts & Sports: Volunteer to support arts and sports events, from front-of-house duties to event coordination.
  • Parents as Partners: Contribute professional expertise by mentoring students, leading talks, and supporting university and careers guidance.
  • NLCSConnect: A programme offering workshops, expert talks, and networking opportunities for parents.

Through these initiatives, parents play a vital role in shaping the vibrant and inclusive culture of NLCS (Singapore).

Class Representatives play a vital role in fostering communication between parents and the school while nurturing a sense of unity within their assigned class or tutor group. This role is typically held by one parent per group, though it may be shared by two parents in some cases.

Responsibilities include:

  • Facilitating Communication: Attending Class Rep meetings, sharing ideas and feedback, and conveying school updates to parents in their group.
  • Welcoming New Families: Reaching out to families, encouraging participation in events like Welcome Breakfasts and House Breakfasts.
  • Promoting Engagement: Staying informed about the school events calendar and encouraging attendance.
  • Event Leadership: Taking the lead, with support from the School Events Team, on organising community-focused events such as Teacher’s Day (August 30th), Children’s Day (October 4th), the Grade 5 Transition Event, and termly social gatherings (e.g., discos, movie nights, barbeques, games).
  • Volunteering for Committees: Supporting cultural and community events in collaboration with the School Events Team.

The coordination of Class Representatives is overseen by the Vice Principal (Pastoral) in the Senior School and the Vice Principal (Head of Junior School) in the Junior School. Processes may vary to reflect the unique needs of students and parents at different levels.

Class Representatives meet as a group at least once per term to discuss broader community matters while maintaining regular communication with Class Teachers or Tutors. They are also responsible for crafting proposals for social events, with guidance and support from the School Events Team.

Our dedicated Parent Ambassadors are instrumental in creating a supportive and inclusive school community, making NLCS (Singapore) a welcoming place for all. They lead by example, heading activity and interest clubs that bring parents together and foster connections within our school community.

As integral members of our school’s fabric, Parent Ambassadors enrich our event calendar with diverse activities that cater to the varied interests of our families. They also play a vital role in welcoming and guiding prospective families. By volunteering their time to support the Admissions Department, they assist with school tours and admissions events, sharing their personal insights and experiences to help new families feel at ease.

Beyond admissions, Parent Ambassadors are at the heart of our efforts to ensure that every new family feels part of our vibrant community. They actively involve newcomers in events and initiatives, nurturing a sense of belonging that reflects the values of NLCS (Singapore).

The Parents as Partners Programme offers parents meaningful opportunities to actively contribute to the holistic development of our students. By collaborating closely with Head of University & Careers Guidance, parents play a vital role in enriching the educational experience while building a strong and cohesive school community. Contributions are thoughtfully aligned with parents’ expertise and experiences to support the programme’s objectives. Their involvement includes:

  • Providing insights from their professional experiences through regular seminars and interactive sessions during career or academic-passion focused events.
  • Delivering talks as part of our McCabe’s Lecture Series
  • Supporting internship and job shadowing opportunities

Parent volunteers with a passion for the arts collaborate closely with teachers to enhance the arts curriculum and foster creativity within the school community. Their contributions include managing front-of-house duties, assisting with decorations, welcoming visiting musicians and performers, and supporting events with refreshments.

Led by the Director of Performing Arts, this programme brings together parents who are enthusiastic about creating vibrant and memorable experiences. Their shared passion for the arts helps nurture a deep appreciation for creativity across our community while strengthening connections through meaningful contributions.

Parents with a passion for sports work alongside coaches and physical education teachers to promote fitness, teamwork, and sportsmanship among students. Their support includes assisting with events such as swim galas and sports days, taking on roles like timekeeping and event coordination.

Guided by the Director of Sport, these parents play an essential role in fostering a spirit of active participation and community camaraderie. Selection is based on their enthusiasm for sports, availability, and dedication to contributing meaningfully to the programme.

NLCSConnect is a series of community events designed to strengthen relationships among parents, students, teachers at NLCS (Singapore) with the wider Singaporean Community. Parent Representatives, along with other members of the parent community, play a vital role in organising and celebrating a wide array of events and festivals throughout the year. By collaborating with the school and leveraging their unique cultural insights, parents help to bring these celebrations to life, showcasing the traditions, values, and heritage of our global community.

These events not only honour cultural diversity but also provide enriching experiences for students, promoting a spirit of tolerance, understanding, and unity. From festive gatherings and international food fairs to music and dance performances, these occasions are a testament to the strength of our collective community and its commitment to fostering global-mindedness in our students.
