Enrichment: Expanding Opportunities in the Junior School

At NLCS (Singapore) Junior School, we are committed to placing no ceilings on what students can achieve. Our enrichment programme fosters ambition, curiosity, and confidence, offering students in Kindergarten 2 through Grade 5 a wealth of opportunities to discover new interests, develop talents, and build self-belief.

Enrichment is an integral part of the Junior School experience, woven into the school day from 14:20 to 15:00, Monday to Friday. Some activities, particularly in Sports and Performing Arts, extend until 15:30, while optional activities are available for younger students beginning in Pre-Kindergarten. This thoughtful structure ensures that every child has the chance to explore their passions and grow within a nurturing and supportive environment.

Our academic enrichment programme in the Junior School inspires intellectual curiosity and a lifelong love of learning. Designed to go beyond the standard curriculum, it provides opportunities for students to delve deeper into subjects and discover the joy of exploration.

Examples of activities include:

Coding and Chess: Developing problem-solving, programming, and strategic thinking skills.

Subject Explorations: Engaging in Reading Clubs, Maths Prodigy, and Science Explorations to encourage hands-on learning and critical thinking.

European Languages: Introducing students to French, Spanish, German, and Italian to broaden cultural and linguistic horizons.

Mandarin-Focused CCAs: Offering unique cultural activities such as Chinese dance, theatre, and journalism to enrich language learning.

A highlight of the academic enrichment programme is the Clanchy Lecture Series, exclusive to the Junior School. Named after Mrs. Joan Clanchy, a former Headmistress of NLCS (UK), the series introduces students to thought-provoking topics and global perspectives, inspiring intellectual exploration.

The Junior School sports programme encourages physical fitness, teamwork, and perseverance. Students can choose from a variety of activities tailored to their interests and abilities.

Examples of sports activities include:

Team Sports: Basketball, Netball, and T-Ball.

Individual Activities: Tennis, Gymnastics, Trampolining, and Golf.

Specialised Training: Opportunities like Swim Squads and the PADI Bubblemaker programme for underwater exploration.

Outdoor Adventures: Climbing and Cross Country running.

Each activity is designed to promote skill development, a love for active living, and a lifelong commitment to health and well-being.

The creative arts in the Junior School provide students with opportunities to express themselves and explore their imaginations.

These activities nurture collaboration, self-expression, and an appreciation for the arts.

For students passionate about the stage, the Junior School’s performing arts programme provides a platform to build confidence, teamwork, and creativity.
