Our annual Languages Week, held in conjunction with the UN Day for International Mother Tongue, is a celebration of the rich linguistic diversity within our community. At its heart, the week invites students to reflect on the profound role that language plays in shaping identity, fostering connection, and building the international-mindedness that defines life at NLCS (Singapore).
For many of our families, the mother tongue, or home language, is more than a means of communication. It carries cultural nuances, shared memories, traditions, and a sense of heritage that cannot easily be translated. In an environment where English naturally becomes the dominant language of learning, friendships, and daily life, it is common for children to gradually shift towards English, even at home. Yet maintaining a connection to one’s first language remains deeply important. It supports children in developing a stronger sense of belonging and identity, enables more meaningful communication with extended family, and preserves a lasting link to their roots and cultural heritage.
Encouraging children to continue using and developing their mother tongue, whether through conversation, reading, storytelling, or cultural experiences, nurtures not only language skills but also a deeper sense of self. It is a reminder that language is not simply a tool for communication; it is a window into who we are and where we come from.
Throughout the week, students engage with cultural traditions, linguistic patterns, debates, and the celebrations of others, whether through their mother tongues or through languages acquired at school, such as Spanish. Activities are designed to bring our community together in a spirit of mutual respect, empathy, and curiosity. Languages Week is a celebration of every voice in our community and a reflection of the openness to our ever-connected world that families value in an international school in Singapore.
