At NLCS (Singapore) Senior School, we believe that everybody matters, and the well-being of our students is at the heart of everything we do. We believe that academic excellence is enhanced by personal and emotional growth. Our dedicated pastoral care programme creates a safe, supportive, and inspiring space where every student is empowered to thrive.
In the Senior School, pastoral care is woven into every aspect of school life, ensuring that students receive the guidance and support they need to grow academically, socially, and emotionally. Through this approach, we help students build confidence, resilience, and the skills they need to face life’s challenges.
Tutor Programme and House System
At NLCS (Singapore), our Tutor Programme and House System create a supportive, close-knit community where every student feels valued and cared for.
Our Personal Tutors are more than just academic guides. They are mentors who also offer encouragement and a listening ear, helping students navigate both their academic and personal journeys. Tutors are actively involved in monitoring progress and offering tailored support to ensure every student feels confident and capable in reaching their full potential.
The House System is designed to nurture a strong sense of belonging, teamwork, and leadership. Through events and activities, students build meaningful connections with their peers and develop valuable life skills such as collaboration, resilience, and school spirit.
Individualised Pastoral Care
Our Personal Tutors offer individualised care and guidance throughout each student’s Senior School journey. They understand their students well, supporting academic progress, personal growth, and participation in enrichment activities. As the main link between home and school, tutors work closely with families to ensure open communication and shared understanding.
Specialist Support
In addition, the Inclusion team supports our students with a range of specialist services:
Our pastoral care in the Senior School is led by the Vice Principal (Pastoral), supported by the Assistant Principals for the Middle School, Upper School, and Sixth Form. Together, they ensure that every student is heard, valued and encouraged to thrive both academically and personally.
With a focus on each student’s well-being and growth, the team works closely with the Heads of Grade, Personal Tutors, specialist staff, and families to provide guidance and care at every stage of school life. By fostering a positive, nurturing environment, we help students develop resilience, confidence, and a strong sense of responsibility as they prepare for life beyond school.
The PSE curriculum is integral to our Senior School pastoral care, equipping students with the skills and knowledge to lead balanced and fulfilling lives. Delivered weekly by the Senior Pastoral Team, students engage with age-appropriate lessons across three key areas: health and well-being, living in the wider world, and relationships. This curriculum supports emotional growth, builds resilience, and encourages empathy, preparing students to navigate the challenges of school life and beyond with confidence and care.
Positive Education has been added to our curriculum from Kindergarten to Grad 8. Drawn from the discipline of Positive Psychology, Positive Education is a strengths based approach which teaches and equips students with the knowledge, tools and skills to help them experience positive mental health and well-being, optimise their learning and support themselves and others to live happy and meaningful lives.
At NLCS (Singapore) Senior School, pastoral care is more than guidance at the surface level, it’s about helping every student flourish. Through meaningful relationships, tailored guidance, and a focus on well-being, we create an environment where each student feels valued, confident, and inspired to reach their full potential.
The school’s Pastoral Care programme, led by a dedicated pastoral team, provides every student with a Personal Tutor, access to emotional-guidance counsellors, learning-support staff, and an on-site Health Centre. This network ensures tailored support for academic, social and emotional needs.
Pastoral care is embedded in everyday routines through tutor check-ins, PSE (Personal & Social Education) and Positive Education lessons, regular mentorship, and access to support services, making wellbeing part of daily student life.
Through the Tutor Programme and House System, students join a close-knit community that fosters belonging, teamwork, support and peer mentorship, helping them feel valued and supported beyond individual classes. We have a grade-based pastoral system where the Heads of Grade and Assistant Principals lead on pastoral support. The House Leaders organise house events and opportunities for our students.
Students can access help via their Personal Tutor, the Emotional Guidance Counsellor or Learning Support team. The pastoral team ensures timely intervention, tailored support and a safe space for student wellbeing and academic needs. There is no one-size-fits-all solution to issues. We take a student-centred approach and put in place whatever is necessary for our students to thrive.
NLCS (Singapore) offers specialist support including Emotional Guidance Counsellors, Learning Support professionals, a Safeguarding team, and an on-site Health Centre, ensuring that students’ mental health, academic support, and wellbeing are all covered. In addition, each student is in a tutor group led by 2 tutors to ensure they are receiving the academic mentoring and support they need.
By combining personal tutoring, peer-community through Houses, pastoral guidance and supportive mentoring, the school nurtures resilience, self-confidence, empathy and social responsibility in students as they grow. These are issues that we address and explore in tutor time, assemblies, PSE and Positive Education, and lessons.
We have comprehensive careers and PSE programmes in the Upper School that are future-looking. This develops further in the Sixth Form when tutors work in partnership with the Sixth Form team and the University and Careers Guidance Team to support our students.
In PSE classes, students will be taught Relationships and Sex Education, Health Education and have discussions surrounding their Wider World and Future Pathways. This holistic curriculum encourages students to ensure their relationships are positive and healthy, they look after their physical and mental health as well as exploring their future choices and decisions.
Personal Tutors act as the primary contact between school and families; staff maintain open channels, offering meetings, updates and collaborative support to ensure each student’s welfare is shared and understood.
