Eighteen Grade 11 students from NLCS (Singapore), supported by Mr Toner, Mr Teng, and Ms Salvador, recently completed the Adventurous Journey component of the Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award, tackling Australia’s iconic Cape to Cape Track. Over seven demanding days, the students traversed 120 kilometres of dramatic coastline, demonstrating stamina, teamwork, and resilience.
Preparation began months earlier during CCA sessions, where students planned their route, coordinated meals, and developed essential skills in first aid, orienteering, and campcraft. This foundation enabled them to operate confidently and safely in the outdoors, carrying all equipment and food for the journey ahead.

The practice trek took them from Cape Naturaliste Lighthouse to Prevelly, with early sights of migrating whales, kangaroos, and native birds. Scenic beachside and bush campsites tested both cooking skills and endurance, while long stretches of rocky headlands, sand dunes, and beaches strengthened resilience and teamwork.
Following a celebratory pancake breakfast in Prevelly, students prepared for the 65-kilometre qualifying expedition, including a gruelling 22-kilometre stretch that demanded focus, composure, and collaboration. Drawing on navigation, communication, and leadership skills honed over the weeks, the group met every challenge with determination. The Cape to Cape landscape – dramatic cliffs, pristine beaches, and clear night skies, provided an awe-inspiring backdrop for growth and reflection.
When the distant Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse finally appeared, it marked the completion of a remarkable journey. As Grade 11 student Yoonsol reflected, “The expedition was a valuable opportunity to develop resilience while forming meaningful bonds. Unexpected challenges taught us to respond thoughtfully and brought us closer together.”
The success of this expedition is a testament to the dedication, teamwork, and adventurous spirit of our students and staff. Programmes like the Duke of Edinburgh Award exemplify the holistic education and character development fostered at our international school in Singapore, where NLCS (Singapore) students are encouraged to push boundaries, embrace challenges, and grow as global citizens.
