Music at NLCS (Singapore) continues to play a vibrant and integral role in school life, reflecting our commitment to a rich, well-rounded education. Across all year groups, students are encouraged to explore music not only as a subject of academic study but also as a powerful means of creative expression and collaboration.
Within the curriculum, students develop their skills as performers, composers, and critical listeners, with opportunities to pursue Music at both IGCSE and IB Diploma level. A thriving instrumental and vocal programme enables students to take individual lessons, work towards internationally recognised examinations, and deepen their musical expertise. Beyond the classroom, our co-curricular programme offers a wide range of ensembles, from choirs and orchestras to smaller chamber and student-led groups, with regular concerts, recitals, and performances giving students the opportunity to showcase their talents and experience the joy of making music together.
Among the highlights of this term was a stunning lunchtime recital by our Chinese Music Group at the Senior School Library, featuring beloved pieces including Ditty of Henan, TarTar Dance, Dance of the Golden Snake, Silver Cloud Chasing the Moon, and Liuyang River, each performed with energy, precision, and real musicality.
The term’s most ambitious showcase came at the Esplanade Recital Room, where an exceptional evening of music-making demonstrated the outstanding talent and commitment of our students. The Percussion Ensemble opened with energy and occasion, followed by the Chinese Music Ensemble, whose performances brought traditional repertoire to life with authenticity and sensitivity. The Chamber Choir sang with poise and control, while our youngest piano trio delivered a remarkably mature interpretation of Mendelssohn’s Piano Trio in D minor. The Advanced Strings ensemble performed Mambo from West Side Story and Vivaldi’s Spring with rhythmic vitality, and accomplished vocal solos from our Upper Sixth students, a beautifully shaped performance from the Cello Ensemble, and a confident account of the Coriolan Overture from the Chamber Orchestra rounded off a truly memorable evening, concluding with a spirited and crowd-pleasing Pirates of the Caribbean.
We are immensely proud of all our student musicians. Their dedication, discipline, and musical integrity were evident throughout, and they are a wonderful reflection of the culture of ambition, creativity, and excellence that defines music at our international school in Singapore.
