The Lower School at NLCS marks a significant stage in each student’s educational journey. From the moment they join in Grade 2, students begin to broaden their subject knowledge through expert-led instruction in areas such as Mandarin, Music, Physical Education & Health, Science, and Computer Science. As they progress, they learn within dedicated facilities, receive increasingly specialist teaching, and are encouraged to think independently, explore their passions, and engage with more challenging material. This culture of scholarship, combined with opportunities for personal choice, ensures that by the time students complete Grade 5, they have developed the intellectual curiosity, confidence, and resilience needed to thrive as they move forward into the Senior School.
Across Grades 2 to 4, students broaden their subject knowledge in Mandarin, Music, Physical Education, Science, and Computer Science. Under subject specialists and within purpose-built learning spaces, they develop confidence, hone critical thinking, and learn to approach new challenges with creativity and resilience. By Grade 4, additional specialist instruction prepares them for a fully departmentalised curriculum, strengthening their ability to tackle increasingly complex ideas.
By Grade 5, these skills coalesce. Students engage with more advanced material, reflect on their progress, and embrace greater intellectual independence, emerging as capable, well-rounded learners fully prepared for the next phase of their educational journey. The 'Showcase' is an important event in the Grade 5 Calendar to apply this scholarly approach and is excellent preparation for the IB Middle Years Programme (MYP) in Grade 6.
In Grade 2, students develop comprehension through fiction, non-fiction, and poetry. By Grade 3, they explore genres like myths, biographies, and suspense stories, enhancing creative writing and analytical skills. In Grade 4, they delve into classical and modern literature, including Shakespeare, while mastering persuasive writing. By Grade 5, students refine advanced writing, grammar, and editing skills while engaging with classic texts and poetry.
In Grade 2, students focus on foundational topics like addition, subtraction, and basic fractions. Grade 3 introduces geometry, decimals, problem-solving practical applications of measurement. By Grade 4, they engage with large numbers, fractions, and practical applications of geometry and introduction to statistics and data handling. Grade 5 expands to algebra, probability, and data analysis, fostering confidence in advanced problem-solving. Mental maths is a crucial skill that is nurtured and developed from Grade 2 onwards.
Across Grades 2 to 5, students explore local and global topics through inquiry-based learning, connecting cultural, geographical, and historical themes to science and broader societal issues.
Students explore creativity through various media, developing artistic techniques and traditions. This encourages self-expression and critical appreciation of art across all grades.
From storytelling to performance, students build confidence, teamwork, and characterisation skills, with a focus on creativity and effective self-expression.
Students develop rhythm, melody, and instrumental skills while exploring cultural diversity in music, fostering a deeper appreciation of global musical traditions.
Starting with digital safety and basic coding in Grade 2, children progress to advanced programming, digital creativity, and problem-solving by Grade 5.
Students build skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing, with tailored lessons that connect linguistic proficiency to cultural understanding.
From foundational concepts in biology, physics, and chemistry in Grade 2 to advanced topics like evolution and material properties in Grade 5, students engage in hands-on investigations that build curiosity and critical thinking.
Students develop fitness, teamwork, and motor skills through structured sports and activities, fostering health and well-being across all grades.
